This Is Just an Event: How to Stop Spiraling and Start Trusting the Process

Sometimes, the hardest part isn’t what’s happening.
It’s what we’re telling ourselves about it.
Because when something like job loss happens, it doesn’t just stay as an event.
It becomes a story.
A spiral.
A fear loop.
A constant “what if” running in the background of your mind.
But what if it’s not what you think it is?
What if this is just an event?
This post is based on a real conversation from our podcast, where we talk about what it actually looks like to stop spiraling and start trusting the process—especially when life feels uncertain.
When your mind starts spiraling
After a major life change, your brain doesn’t stay neutral.
It goes into overdrive.
You start thinking:
What if this doesn’t work?
What if we made the wrong decision?
What if we can’t recover from this?
And before you even realize it, you’re no longer dealing with reality.
You’re dealing with a story your mind created.
That’s the spiral.
The shift: this is just an event
One of the most powerful mindset shifts you can make is this:
This is just an event.
Not your identity.
Not your future.
Not your entire life.
Just something that happened.
Because when you label something as “everything,” it feels overwhelming.
But when you bring it back down to:
This is one moment. One situation. One chapter.
It becomes something you can actually move through.
Fear and excitement can exist at the same time
One thing we’ve realized through this process is that you can feel:
Scared… and excited
Uncertain… and hopeful
Doubtful… and motivated
At the same time.
And that doesn’t mean you’re doing something wrong.
It means you’re in the middle of growth.
Most people expect clarity before they move forward.
But in reality, you move forward while feeling all of it.
Why we used to spiral
For a long time, our pattern looked like this:
Try something → Overthink → Doubt → Quit → Start over
We’ve done it with:
Businesses
Ideas
Opportunities
Different paths
And it wasn’t because we weren’t capable.
It was because we didn’t trust the process.
We were constantly looking for certainty before continuing.
You don’t need full clarity to move forward
One of the biggest realizations in this season of life is this:
You don’t need to have everything figured out.
You don’t need the full plan.
You don’t need perfect clarity.
You just need to take the next step.
And then the next.
Because clarity doesn’t come from thinking.
It comes from doing.
The real work is staying with yourself
There are going to be days where:
You feel confident
You feel motivated
You feel like everything is working
And then the next day:
You doubt everything
You question your direction
You feel like quitting
That’s the part no one talks about.
The real work isn’t avoiding those moments.
It’s staying with yourself through them.
Not abandoning your path just because your emotions shift.
Why “trust the process” actually matters
“Trust the process” sounds simple.
But in reality, it’s one of the hardest things to do.
Because it means:
Continuing without proof
Moving without guarantees
Showing up without certainty
But the truth is, every path that leads somewhere meaningful requires that.
No one starts with full clarity.
They build it as they go.
This is where everything changes
The moment you stop treating everything like a crisis…
And start seeing it as part of a process…
Everything shifts.
You stop reacting.
You start responding.
You stop spiraling.
You start moving forward.
And slowly, things begin to come together.
