Why does it feel like everyone else is moving forward while you're stuck in the same place?
If you've ever felt like you're doing all the right things but have nothing to show for it yet, this episode is for you.
In this honest conversation, Ken and Kim talk about the messy middle—the season between where you are and where you want to be. It's the part of personal growth, healing, rebuilding, entrepreneurship, relationships, and life transformation that almost nobody shares online.
While social media celebrates the finish line, very few people talk about the self-doubt, uncertainty, setbacks, frustration, and emotional exhaustion that happen before the breakthrough.
In this episode, we discuss:
- Why you feel stuck even when you're making progress
- The psychological trap of comparing your life to others
- How social media hides the reality of growth and success
- Why the "messy middle" is where most people give up
- The difference between lack of results and lack of progress
- How to stay motivated when nothing seems to be working
- Why consistency matters more than visible success
- Practical mindset shifts for rebuilding your life during difficult seasons
Whether you're rebuilding after a job loss, working on your marriage, healing from the past, starting a business, overcoming fear, or simply trying to figure out what's next, this conversation will remind you that you're not behind—you may simply be in the part of the story that nobody talks about.
Your breakthrough isn't always visible while it's happening.
Sometimes the most important growth occurs in the middle.

Why does it seem like everyone else is posting their after picture while we're still living in the messy middle? Or have you ever felt like you're doing all the right things, but you have nothing to show for it?
SPEAKER_01And when was the last time you saw someone post about the months they wanted to quit? Could it be that we're not behind it all? We're just in the chapter that nobody shares. It seems like everybody's starting a business or buying big houses. Everybody's posting their success stories. And everybody seems to have life figured out. And meanwhile, maybe you're rebuilding your confidence. Maybe you're working on your marriage or going through a divorce. Maybe you're trying to heal. Maybe you're just trying to figure out what comes next. And it can feel like everyone else is crossing the finish line while you're still running the race.
SPEAKER_03Right.
SPEAKER_01But the truth is most people aren't at the finish line. Most people are in the middle. The problem is nobody posts about the middle. Nobody posts the self-doubt, the failed attempts, the crying in the car, the arguments, the setbacks, the uncertainty, the days where they want to quit. They post the outcome, not the process.
SPEAKER_03Right.
SPEAKER_01Today we want to talk about the messy middle, the season between where you were and where you're going. The season where you've started changing, but you don't see the results yet. You're doing the work, but life hasn't caught up. You're becoming someone new, but don't feel like that person yet. And honestly, this is where most people quit.
SPEAKER_00Right. It's funny that you mentioned that uh cry people crying in the car.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_00When you're depressed, you're frustrated, you're working on something, and it seems like the world's against you. Your family, your friends, or finances or whatever, and then you're just driving and all of a sudden you're just like, What the fuck is going on?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I've been there.
SPEAKER_00You know? I think we've all been there, but you won't you won't ever see that on social media.
SPEAKER_01No.
SPEAKER_00We weren't excited to talk about this today because uh no one talks about the messy middle. You know, the beginning is exciting uh for anything, for a project or for a business or a relationship, right? But no one talked about how hard it is when you're walking through whatever the case might be.
SPEAKER_01The beginning has hope and the ending has the reward.
SPEAKER_00Right.
SPEAKER_01But the middle is just full of uncertainty.
SPEAKER_00Right. Full of uncertainty. And no one shows that. No one wants to talk about that, but today what we're gonna talk about is the middle sounds like, is this even working?
SPEAKER_01Am I wasting my time? Should I just go back to what I was doing? And that's where people abandon and quit.
SPEAKER_03Right.
SPEAKER_01They give up businesses, fitness goals, relationships, healing journeys, dreams. And it's not because they're failing, it's because they're tired.
SPEAKER_00They're emotionally exhausted.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. You're frustrated.
SPEAKER_00You're frustrated, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_00You're in the middle of it.
SPEAKER_01You don't you just don't see the progress.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, you don't see the progress, right? For example, you know, after the layoff that was laid off a month ago, uh, we're still trying to rebuild. We're still working our our online business, uh working on the podcast as well, and we're right at the middle.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Here we are showing up, recording the episodes and navigating life. And basically everything's being documented with the with the episodes every week. But no, we are in the middle, in the messy middle.
SPEAKER_01We're in the thick of it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Yes, that requires a lot of a lot of discipline.
SPEAKER_01Perseverance.
SPEAKER_00And perseverance.
SPEAKER_01And showing up when we don't want to show up.
SPEAKER_00But the way we see it, we know from our past experiences that everything's gonna require a huge amount of effort. Even though we believe that in order to accomplish things in life, you don't necessarily have to put this huge amount of work, work, work, work, work, work. But everything that you're building a uh our business or a relationship, you have to show up, you have to give the best of you, right? So if you're in a relationship, you have to bring the best version of yourself, right? Or if you wanna, you know, take the relationship to the next level. So you gotta show up with good intentions, with love, being authentic, right? So same with the business. Uh, you have to show up that you wanna do it, that you like what you're doing. It's just a journey. And we talk about this, Kim and I, so we know that there is gonna be some work up front that we have to do in order to accomplish the things that uh that we want to accomplish.
SPEAKER_01Well, I think before even jumping into like the podcast, we had the conversation where it was like, if we do this, there's gonna be very little momentum and very little movement in the beginning. And we have to be okay with that. And I remember talking to you very specifically, like, even when it feels hard, we need to show up. Even when there's no movement, we need to show up. And because nothing will transpire if like we don't build that foundation, right?
SPEAKER_03Right.
SPEAKER_01And put in the time and effort and just keep showing up time after time, even when we don't want to in the thick of it, when we, you know, are arguing or when we feel shitty or when we're just not in a good mood, or whatever the case may be with a hundred other things that are going in in life, we need to show up anyways. And that is the messy middle where it's like you don't see what you're building. You don't see you don't feel the foundation because none of those end results are there. But you have to show up anyways.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, because one of the biggest lies we ever tell ourselves is if I cannot see progress, I must now be making progress. Right. But transformation is often invisible first, right? So you're not gonna see the results immediately. Let's say if you're trying to lose weight, you're not gonna see the results immediately. It's gonna take some time, right? And you know why you won't see the results immediately? Because becoming is often more uncomfortable than staying the same.
SPEAKER_01Or if you're trying to build confidence, you don't suddenly wake up with confidence one day. It it accumulates through repetitive action.
SPEAKER_00Which requires work and people don't want to do the work. Right. Because it takes a lot of energy. Right. You need to get the motivation going. You need to be, again, the discipline gotta be there. The conviction to attain something is gonna take it's gonna take some time.
SPEAKER_01It's like last week when you and I were both very frustrated. We were trying to come up with some ideas for this episode. And one of the ideas was, what if the most important part of your story is the part you wish would hurry up and end? And we both kind of really laughed at that because the middle is the part that sucks. And I and I do want it to end. We want to see the end result, right? We want the whatever we aspire for in our lives, which ours is, you know, financial freedom, time freedom, being able to travel with our family, our kids, and stuff like that. And we want to hurry up and get to that part, the fun part. We want to be able to reap the rewards.
SPEAKER_00Right. Just the time in between is just painful.
SPEAKER_01It's very painful. And you know, we're we said that to ourselves several times, like conversations we had last week, where like we just want to be there already. Like we're tired of not seeing tangible results.
SPEAKER_00We are maybe immediate results.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, like we're exhausted and stressed.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. The frustration in general, that's what I think sometimes. Like, you know, we've done so many things, we're trying so many things, and you know, you get up in the morning, we're having breakfast, trying to get ready for the day, and we're just thinking, like, man, another day, right in the middle, time in between.
SPEAKER_02Yep.
SPEAKER_00How can you get the energy and then go and record and or put the episodes together and or just check our inventory or our e-commerce store to see how we can improve ourselves, you know? I remember years ago when I was thinking like even our kid realized it too. Like he he started working, and then very soon he's gonna be making a little bit more, but then he was doing the math and he said, Oh, this is gonna be just $127 a week more.
SPEAKER_01Well, he was saying, yeah, if I make even like a a couple dollars more, or it doesn't even really move the needles. We're like, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so and and and I had this conversation with you, like, Kim, even if I'm tomorrow my boss said, hey, you you're gonna make ten, twenty thousand dollars more. Yeah, you're you're gonna pay more bills, you're gonna have a little bit more money, but that's not the end result.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_00That's not what we're looking for. And it's funny because the majority of people out there that were looking to make more money, or some people are just happy, oh man, I wish I can make five thousand more. But that's is that gonna take you to the end result?
SPEAKER_01No, it doesn't move the needle very much. It's just like a drop in the bucket.
SPEAKER_00It's a drop in the bucket. Because we lift it in the past.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00You know? We lift it and sometimes we see it like, oh, you know, our kids saw it at 20, he's 20 years old. He said, Oh, this is just a hundred and hundred and twenty bucks.
SPEAKER_02Right.
SPEAKER_00It's gonna help, and I'm pretty sure some people that would be enough. Right? Because everyone has different uh different goals, right? No, not not everybody wants to be a millionaire or have a business, or some people they just wants to kind of get by and they're okay with it. Hey, I just I just need 250 bucks more a week, and I'll be okay. That's all I need. But they can they would for some reason these forces are holding them back and they won't get the 250.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Right.
SPEAKER_01And like we were frustrated because we kept saying, like, you know, our daughter just started summer vacation and she wants to go here and she wants to go to this camp and she wants to travel there and all these things. And oh, my friends are going here, and my friends are going to Hawaii for on a Hawaiian cruise, and my friend is going to where France. And and then I hear the moms like, oh, where are you going? Where are you going? Everybody's talking about all these wonderful vacations they're taking. Oh, I want to be doing those things too, but like we're in the middle of building these businesses. Like you just got laid off four months ago. Like we're not in a position to be, you know, spending that kind of money. Of course, can we? Yeah, we we could do that, but like we're responsible.
SPEAKER_00Like a we're trying to be responsible. Yeah, well, like to let's say just for a week, let's go to, I don't know, to we're thinking to go to Estonia. There's an event there that we wanted to go. And we talked in the past about Mind Valley. It's a great summit for entrepreneurs, visionaries, people that are just basically a different mindset, different type of people.
SPEAKER_01Which is what we're really into. Right. That would just like propel us forward if we could be surrounded by that energy. And, you know, that would be a phenomenal trip. And we could take our daughter to that because they had a kids program there as well. But we're trying to be smart about our money at this moment in time. So, but that's the thing that sucks. It's like when you're in the middle, you can't make those splurges.
SPEAKER_02Right.
SPEAKER_01And I feel like our middle has been expanded across this like 10, 12 year period now, because we've been in the middle since we bought the restaurants in 2014. It's now 2026.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And we're still rebuilding because we had to overcome such financial hardship from all that and rebuilding businesses and then more failed investments and et cetera, et cetera. But, you know, so I feel like we've been living in this middle place for over 12 years now. And it's exhausting. It's like, I just want it to be done. And I feel like, man, our kids have had to suffer right along with us. And I'm not saying they have a bad life, they have a fantastic life. I'm not saying that. I'm just saying like you always want to do more, more, more. What more can I do? What more, you know, fun things can we do with our kids, kind of thing. But like you always want to do more. But in the same breath, if we had just worked regular jobs versus, you know, always trying to start a business or run a business, then I feel like we m would have been in a different position all all along to be able to do more things that we want to do with them.
SPEAKER_03Right.
SPEAKER_01And my hope is that we can still do those things before they have families of their own and don't have any time for us anymore.
SPEAKER_00Right, right. And the messy middle is just it's unique. It's unique. But uh the thing was this morning uh that I saw a nice a quick clip that uh there's a guy talking. I'm not gonna say the name, but the he was saying, I started a business years ago, it failed. I started another one, it failed. I started another one, it failed again. And then I started another one and I made a hundred million dollars. Yeah, and then he said, he said, you just basically one opportunity away.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Because when you cross that once you make it in his case, like he when he said, when I made it a hundred million bucks, I don't care how many times I failed in the past. And that kind of makes sense, you know. If I right now, if we just get if we are very, very successful and we have all these, we get all these millions all of a sudden. Who cares about I won't I'll I'll forget. In six months I'll forget.
SPEAKER_01Um like I don't even yeah, uh so would I, but I don't even like hold a grudge against our failures. Like I'm thankful for the failures it it has brought us to where we are of where we are is light years away than when we started. So like it's been so helpful and so educational. Yeah, that I wouldn't trade it for the world.
SPEAKER_00No, it was needed. It is needed. There's like this vessel, right? Like a vessel wasn't big enough, right, to get the stuff we wanted to get. When we started the businesses back then, we didn't know how to operate them. We were learning along the way, right?
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And now after all that failure and all that that shit happened, that's now our starting point. Where a starting point was now from uh for a learning experience instead of just from my failure or from a failed experience. Yes, it was a failure, but we use it in our advantage for every decision that we make moving forward.
SPEAKER_01Right. We know that the becoming is more uncomfortable than staying the same. And this is a powerful shift because we think the hardest part is deciding to change when actually it's usually in our experience, you know, the hardest part is staying committed after we've decided. And that's what I was saying before. I was like the conversation about us starting the podcast is if we're gonna start this, we need to commit to continue it even when shit gets hard.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Because in the messy middle, the old habits want to pull you back and the new habits don't feel natural yet. Your identity is changing and you feel caught between two versions of yourself, not who you were, not fully who you're becoming. That space feels uncomfortable. So when I was going through some of this stuff last week, my mind always reverts to our worst case scenario, which is somebody gets a job, right? Like one of us can get a job, you mainly, not me.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. But um your brain tries to default back.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, my brain keeps going falling back into that worst case scenario. Like, okay, because it's comf, it's not, it's not comfortable. It's very uncomfortable, actually. But I'm like, okay, I've done it before, right? How many times have I had a job? Of course. Like, we can do that. It's so easy. And so I fall back into that trap because we're not at that next stage or that next level yet. So I keep defaulting to that and I hate it. And I know when I bring it up, you hate it. Like I just get so down about everything when you're not when I'm not seeing the momentum or the movement or anything. And of course, like, you know, that that translates in in our scenario, that translates to dollars in the bank account, right? So I default back to my brain will be like, okay, well, maybe Ken should just go get a job and you know, then it'll bring that sense of security back. Right. At least. And I can breathe a little bit, you know?
SPEAKER_00Yeah. But we know we we talk that that's not exactly what we wanted to do. So it's is that an option? Yes, there's always an option, right? But that's not the end goal. So again, we often treat the this middle that we're in like an obstacle, right? Like, oh shit. You know, you need you need you need to generate some income, you need to start making some money. Right. And sometimes we just feel like, oh, we have to rush this through. Or you feel like the desperation, things gotta work out, the messy middle is just too it's funky, it's just the uncertainty, it's so crazy, right?
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00But we know that the resilience is built right here. Right? The character again is built right at this moment. The wisdom, the confidence, everything is being built right now while while we are in the middle. So we're not delaying, I am I know that we're not delaying the transformation. Let's just, again, we're just building this foundation. We're just navigating it, and this is what you actually have to hold on to hope. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01It's like the book I was I read last week that I was telling you about, uh The Surrender Experiment by Michael Singer. I was reading that last week after I had this little kind of personal meltdown in my mind about going back to getting jobs or whatever. But the whole premise of this book was how the guy just kept surrendering to the opportunities that were presented to him and following the path, even if he was resisting it, like internally, like in his mind chatter, right? His mind was going, What are you crazy? You don't want that, don't do that. But he was like, Nope. The opportunity presented itself, and I'm just gonna follow through with it. So I'm here's my hope is that when you were laid off, that was the opportunity that presented itself to us that we wanted for so long, right? Like that was our ultimate goal was to get you out of that job. But we struggled to take that next step. And I feel like to pull the plug. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I feel like that needed to happen to us in order for us to take the risk. So I keep returning back to that. And I'm like, okay, that happened for us, and we need to surrender and stop trying to control the outcome. Yeah, because the control within me wants to say, please go get a job now. Yeah. You know, this is scary. Yeah, not having an income. Yeah, yeah. Um, so like the control part within me wants to say that, but the the desire to surrender part of me wants to just say, This has happened for a reason. This is happening for us. We need to see this through. We need to keep building. You know, this is our passion. We ultimately want to help people, and we need to see it through.
SPEAKER_00Because if you think about it, if I go get a job tomorrow, we're it's gonna feel like shed. Yeah. Now what? Okay, yeah, I get a job. I'm making good money, whatever, good. What are we doing now? Now I'm trapped again to the freaking clock.
SPEAKER_01Right. And then the universe is like, what are you doing? I just gave you this huge opportunity that you'd been begging me for. Exactly. And you're going to get a job because you can't handle it. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00You can't handle like the messy middle, like you're in the middle.
SPEAKER_01Keep going.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And so that's the piece that I'm really holding on to. But it's it's scary and it sucks.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And there's, you know, it's messy.
SPEAKER_00And for whoever's going through a transition, also, we we do a lot of meditation. And for those out there that needs to, that are listening right now, that are in the messy middle, you have to kind of do some some mental exercises as well. Because that's exhausting. So if you like to do, and again, like I said, in our case, we like to do meditation. We like to do yoga. We don't do it that often. I guess again, we don't have time or so. Or um, I'm making probably excuses. Probably, you know, I can do it.
SPEAKER_01Sounds like a lot of excuses.
SPEAKER_00Um exactly. Uh find something to inspire you to keep you anchored to the messy middle as you navigate the messy middle and you reach that goal. At some point it's gonna show up. One day you're gonna get the call, one day you're gonna get the email, one day you're gonna meet the right person. It's just gonna happen. It's gonna happen right in there, right in front of us. It's gonna happen just like that. That's the way I see it, and that's the way it happened in the past for us. So again, just try to find a good book, exercise, go on a diet, whatever you need to do. Just do it while you're while you're going in the messy middle. Because if you continue trying, you you you're gonna reach the other side.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, this messy middle that we're going through right now is our transformation part. Like this is the part I know we wanna rush through it and get to the end, right? Because the end is what we're striving for, of course, like the the fun stuff. Right. Right. But this period right now is the important part because this is the foundation. This is where our resilience is going to be built. This is what our learning is going to come from. Our confidence will come from this part. It's going to build our character up. And as much as we want to rush through it, it's not something we should rush through because these are the characteristics that we need to Some people are thinking like, yeah, but I don't want any character development anymore. No, I know. I I think that often too. Like, okay.
SPEAKER_00I'm done with this.
SPEAKER_01The character's good.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. But now, trust me, this for us that we're going through, I know we're gonna see it very soon that, oh, this is why we started recording. Oh, this is why we're doing things differently. Oh, this is why now our marriage is so strong. In the past, I was afraid to be working from home. I remember years ago, like I can't work from home. It's just I need to go somewhere. I wasn't ready to be home. I was there was such a fear that I need I didn't even know how to tell you. Like part of me was like, I don't know how I'm gonna feel at home. You know? It wasn't that I didn't want to be here with you.
SPEAKER_01It's just like, you know, the there's a I think you've thought you would feel trapped.
SPEAKER_00Trapped, or or like I needed the challenge, or I like to interact with people. You know what I mean? So your life is always changing until when it happens that okay, now you're gonna go home. And now I'm home. And I am ready to be home, working on my business, working on the podcast. We rarely fight. We rar rarely have like heated arguments.
SPEAKER_01I mean we argue, they're not heated usually. Yeah, we argue, yeah, but of course exactly.
SPEAKER_00You're an annoying AF, but Yeah, a little bit sometimes when I'm hungry.
SPEAKER_01I wish that were the only time.
SPEAKER_00All right, but so we have some powerful takeaways for you guys for those that are in the messy middle and the social media is messing you up. So just because you cannot see the results yet doesn't mean nothing is happening. Things are happening as long as you're working on them.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, exactly. That's your foundation that's being built, or you know, the the seed that you've planted. Right. That hasn't sprouted yet, but you're watering it, giving it sunlight and delicious, nutritious soil.
SPEAKER_00Yep. So manure on top.
SPEAKER_01Yep. Takeaway number two a messy middle isn't evidence that you're failing. It's evidence that you're still becoming.
SPEAKER_00That's right. If you think about it, that makes sense.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00You're becoming that thing that you want to be. That's why you're in the messy middle. If you don't want to become anything, if you don't want to reach that next point, you're not in the messy middle. You get there when you are trying to become someone.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And takeaway number three that we have for you guys, most transformation take longer than social media makes them appear. Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that's a big one. Is again, you know, when when you're seeing people on social media, you are seeing their end result. They are not showing the journey. They are not showing you the beginning, the hardship, the crappy, messy middle, the days they wanted to quit, the days they wanted to give up, the crying, the heartache, the this, the crying in the car, like we said earlier. They're not showing that stuff because it sucks and it's vulnerable. And people don't want to share those moments because they're they're awful.
SPEAKER_00Right. They make it seem like, oh, yeah, I have this shitty job. I started this website and these things, and then five months in, I'm rich.
SPEAKER_01And I'm rich. Takeaway number four, growth is often invisible before it's visible. It's like the seed I just talked about. Like you planted the seed, it's basically invisible, right? Unless you dig it up. So while it's growing underground, it's growing its roots. They're taking shape underground. You can't see any of that. But it's happening underneath the surface.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Like right now, for us in the messy middle is building the character that we hate. Like we feel like, Jesus, this character's been built for so long.
SPEAKER_02Right.
SPEAKER_00It's been built for for quite some time.
SPEAKER_02Right.
SPEAKER_00But yeah, we need this uh inner growth per se. Again, we just don't see it, but it's necessary. Takeaway number five, uh, you don't need proof that it's working to keep showing up. Sometimes you only get proof after you've stayed consistent long enough.
SPEAKER_01That one's hard because you know, we want to see proof. We want to see that it's working. It's really hard to just blindly trust that something is working. Because it may not be. Like that's the reality of it, right?
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01But I think the biggest problem is, again, like the quitting. You know, you're just you quit before you quit too early. I know that I have been guilty of that with so, so, so many things in my life. I quit too early. I give up, I doubt. I don't see results, so I just walk away, pivot, change direction, do whatever. And that's not the answer. And that's why going into this, you know, again, I we promised. I I we had that discussion of not quitting too soon this time.
SPEAKER_00I see a lot of credits. They're gonna at some point they're gonna be real credits, and then we're gonna use them. Can we build some reflection questions for you guys for all those that are in the messy middle? Question number one. Where in your life are you expecting visible results too quickly?
SPEAKER_01Yes, that's a good one to reflect upon. Question two, what progress have you dismissed simply because it hasn't become obvious yet? Question three, are you comparing your daily reality to someone else's highlight reel? That's a no-no.
SPEAKER_00Uh question number four, what version of yourself are you becoming that you might not fully recognize yet?
SPEAKER_01Question number five, if you trusted that your effort was working, how would you show up differently this week?
SPEAKER_00So maybe you're not behind. Maybe you're not failing, maybe you're not stuck. Maybe you're just in the part of the story that nobody posts. The messy middle. And if that's where you are right now, don't quit. Because the people you're comparing yourself to, they had a messy middle too. You just never got to see it.
