Depression, Medication, and the Mindset Shift That Changed My Life

Depression, Medication, and the Mindset Shift That Changed My Life

When you’re in it… nothing sounds like it will work

If you’ve ever been in a deep depression…

You already know this.

Nothing sounds helpful.
Nothing feels possible.
Nothing makes sense.

And if someone told you to meditate?

You’d probably think:

“Are you kidding me?”

Because when you’re that deep in it…
you’re not looking for tools.

You’re just trying to survive.

This is the part no one talks about

There’s something uncomfortable, but important—that needs to be said:

You can’t force someone to change.

You can’t convince someone out of depression.

Because change only happens when:

They’re ready
They’re open
They want it bad enough

That was the turning point.

The realization that changes everything

For years, the belief was:

“I have a chemical imbalance.”

And that belief shaped everything.

Medication
Treatments
Identity

But eventually… something shifted.

A realization:

What if I’m not just experiencing this…
What if I’m participating in it?

That doesn’t mean depression isn’t real.

It means:

Thoughts create emotions
Emotions create chemistry
Chemistry reinforces the pattern

And over time…
that pattern can feel like an addiction.

The part people don’t want to hear

You can have support.
You can have treatment.
You can have help.

But at some point…

You have to step in.

Because if your thoughts are left unchecked…

They will run your life.

The moment everything shifted

The real turning point wasn’t medication.

It wasn’t a single treatment.

It was this:

“I have control over my thoughts.”

That realization didn’t instantly fix everything.

But it opened a door.

And once that door opened…

Everything changed.

What the process actually looked like

Not pretty.

Not easy.

Not quick.

It looked like:

  • Catching negative thoughts constantly
  • Challenging them in real time
  • Replacing them over and over again
  • Doing it daily, relentlessly

Like fighting a battle in your own mind.

Because you are.

Let’s be clear about something important

This is not:

“Just think positive and you’ll be fine”

That’s not real.

This is:

Awareness
Intention
Repetition
Rewiring

There’s a difference.

The treatments were part of the journey - not the solution

Medication
ECT
TMS
Ketamine

All of it played a role.

All of it helped in different ways.

But none of it created lasting change on its own.

Because the real work hadn’t been done yet.

The real work

This is the part most people avoid.

Because it’s uncomfortable.
Because it hurts.
Because it takes time.

Healing.

And not surface-level healing.

Deep healing.

The kind where you go back and face:

  • Old experiences
  • Old beliefs
  • Old emotional patterns

The kind where you don’t just move on…

You process it.

Why this part matters more than anything

Because unprocessed experiences don’t disappear.

They stay.

They show up in:

Your reactions
Your triggers
Your patterns
Your identity

And they repeat…

Until you deal with them.

The shift from victim to ownership

At some point, the identity changed.

From:

“I’m depressed”

To:

“I don’t identify with that anymore.”

That doesn’t mean life is perfect.

It means:

You’re no longer controlled by it.

The truth most people need to hear

You don’t just heal once.

You evolve.
You grow.
You uncover new layers.

Healing is a process.

Not a destination.

But here’s the most important part

There is hope.

No matter how far gone you feel…

No matter how long you’ve struggled…

No matter how many things haven’t worked…

There is still a way forward.

If you’re willing to do the work.

And yes… the work is hard

This isn’t easy.

You will:

Feel resistance
Want to quit
Question everything

That doesn’t mean it’s not working.

It means you’re in it.

This is what rebuilding your life actually looks like

Not a perfect plan.

Not a magic solution.

Not one breakthrough moment.

It’s:

Awareness
Daily effort
Inner work
Consistency

Over time…

That becomes your new identity.
